The Journey of Deconstruction: Crafting an Animated Storytelling Video for San Antonio
The City of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation approached us to create an animation about Deconstruction and Circular Economy, therefore we knew it was a unique opportunity to make a real impact by creating a storytelling video. This wasn’t just about explaining a concept; it was about inspiring a movement through effective storytelling. Here’s how we brought this project to life, one creative step at a time.
Step 1: Crafting the Storytelling Animation Script
Every great animation begins with a compelling story. For this project, we collaborated closely with the Office of Historic Preservation to ensure the script was informative yet engaging, utilizing strong storytelling techniques. We broke down the complex concept of deconstruction—the process of salvaging building materials for reuse—into digestible, relatable ideas. The goal? Make it accessible for everyone, from policymakers to everyday citizens.
Step 2: Drawing the Animated Storytelling Vision
Once the script was finished, our team began working on the storyboard. Each scene was drawn by hand to outline the visuals and ensure the story flowed well with the script. This step helped us picture the animation’s timing and changes, giving us a clear plan for the final product. The hand-drawn images also allowed the client to see how their ideas were developing, ensuring we were aligned before starting production. The importance of storytelling was clear at this stage.
Step 3: Bringing It to Life with Animation
With the storyboard approved, we moved into the animation phase. Our talented animators transformed static sketches into dynamic visuals, adding movement, color, and depth to every scene. Special attention was given to details that would resonate with viewers—from showcasing the salvaged materials to illustrating the environmental benefits of deconstruction. The result was a vibrant, engaging animation. As a result it not only educated but inspired action through storytelling.
Step 4: Fine-Tuning the Details
The final touches are where the magic happens. We added voiceover narration to guide viewers through the story and incorporated sound effects to enhance the viewing experience. We even found a way to work Timothy the Hippo from the San Antonio Zoo into the animation.
