San Antonio, Texas, faces a critical issue of economic segregation, ranking as one of the most economically divided cities in the United States. A staggering 20% of the city’s population cannot afford broadband internet access, creating an urgent need to address this digital divide. For many, internet access is seen as a luxury, but for low-income San Antonians, the lack of it represents a significant barrier to upward mobility and a better quality of life. Without access to the internet, marginalized communities struggle to apply for jobs, access healthcare, or pursue education—all essential elements for improving their circumstances.

In response to this crisis, The IMG Studio was hired by SA Digital Connects to produce a powerful video that would raise awareness and advocate for increased funding to provide internet access for all San Antonio residents. The goal was to convey to affluent stakeholders—both public and private—the importance of addressing this inequality and ensuring that everyone in the city has the opportunity to thrive in the digital age.

To bring the issue to life, we chose to focus the video on a compelling personal story. The video profiles a man who grew up in public housing without internet access at home, a reality faced by many in low-income neighborhoods. Unlike many of his peers, this individual was able to access the internet at school, where he learned how to code. This invaluable opportunity allowed him to build an online business, ultimately lifting his family out of poverty. His success story exemplifies the transformative power of internet access and serves as a poignant reminder of the opportunities that could be available to others if given the chance.

By humanizing the issue and showcasing a real-world example of how access to the internet can change lives, the video aims to inspire action and encourage stakeholders to invest in expanding broadband access. SA Digital Connects hopes this video will not only raise awareness of the digital divide but also motivate individuals and organizations to contribute the necessary resources to bridge it.
